COLD TURKEY

Cold Turkey

1 - a blunt expression of views; "I told him cold turkey"
- verbal expression, verbalism, expression - the communication (in speech or writing) of your beliefs or opinions; "expressions of good will"; "he helped me find verbal expression for my ideas"; "the idea was immediate but the verbalism took hours"
2. - complete and abrupt withdrawal of all addictive drugs or anything else on which you have become dependent; "he quit smoking cold turkey"; "she quit her job cold turkey"
- drug withdrawal, withdrawal - the termination of drug taking

"Cold Turkey" is a song written by John Lennon, recorded by The Plastic Ono Band, and released as a single in October 1969. According to Peter Brown in his book The Love You Make, the song was written in a "creative outburst" following Lennon and Yoko Ono going "cold turkey" from their brief heroin addictions. Brown also states that Lennon presented the song to Paul McCartney as a potential single by The Beatles, but was refused and released it as a Plastic Ono Band single with sole writing credits to him.

It was the first song John Lennon ever wrote that he took sole credit for; his previous compositions were attributed to the Lennon/McCartney partnership.

The song features Eric Clapton on lead guitar, Klaus Voormann on bass and Ringo Starr on drums. It was recorded in Abbey Road Studio.

In 1969 Lennon returned his MBE to Buckingham Palace saying: "I am returning this MBE in protest against Britain’s involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam, and against Cold Turkey slipping down the charts. With love, John Lennon of Bag.”

John Lennon would perform this song along with “Don't Worry Kyoko” live at the Lyceum Ballroom with George Harrison, Keith Moon, Eric Clapton, and others.

This would be Lennon's last live performance with any of the other Beatles and this version would be available on his Some Time in New York City album. The song's first appearance on a John Lennon album was the 1975 compilation Shaved Fish.

Cold Turkey

Temperature's rising,
Fever is high,
Can't see no future,
Can't see no sky.

My feet are so heavy,
So is my head,
I wish I was a baby,
I wish I was dead.

Cold turkey has got me on the run.

My body is aching,
Goose-pimple bone,
Can't see no body,
Leave me alone.

My eyes are wide open,
Can't get to sleep,
One thing I'm sure of,
I'm in at the deep freeze.

Cold turkey has got me on the run.
Cold turkey has got me on the run.

Thirty-six hours,
Rolling in pain,
Praying to someone,
Free me again.

Oh I'll be a good boy,
Please make me well,
I promise you anything,
Get me out of this hell.

Cold turkey has got me on the run.
Oh-, oh-, oh--, oh...
